Random Game Wednesdays: Atari Video Cube (Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 2)

The second Atari Flashback Classics collection must be full of games that I’ve never heard of before. Just like Gravitar, Atari Video Cube is a game I knew nothing about, but actually came away pretty impressed. It’s still an Atari 2600 game, and thus you can’t expect a whole lot of depth. But, what’s here is pretty cool. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Gravitar (Atari Flashback Classics Vol 2)

Until today, I had never even heard of the Atari 2600 game “Gravitar”. From the title, I felt like it was probably a pretty generic sci-fi shooter. I was kind of right. Gravitar is a shooter in the same vein as Asteroids, with the same thruster-based movement and triangle-shaped spaceship. But Gravitar manages to separate itself from other similar games with a genuine sense of progression, something that is lacking in a lot of Atari games. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Asteroids (Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 2)

I’ve gotten a lot of use out of the first Atari Flashback Classics collection. It opened up fifty games that I normally would not be able to easily get screenshots of, not without investing in special equipment anyway. With that in mind, picking up the second collection was a no-brainer. This week, the random number generator gave me a “1”, which means I played the arcade version of Asteroids. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Quadrun (Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 1)

I like to think that I’m pretty good at being able to just pick up and play a video game. And I don’t think that’s a very special trait. If you’re reading a blog dedicated to video games, you can probably do that too. Just look at the screen, push the buttons a couple times to see what they do, and off you go. That was not the case for me when trying out Quadrun today. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: RealSports Soccer (Atari Flashback Classics Vol 1)

I thought for this week’s edition of Random Game Wednesdays, I’d go back to Atari Flashback Cassics Vol 1. I haven’t had much luck with that particular compilation in the past, but I know there’s good games on there. Looking at the list, there’s plenty that I played while growing up that I liked a whole lot. So, once again, I used the random number generator and received another game that I had never played before. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Pong (Atari Flashback Classics Vol 1)

One of the gifts I received for Christmas this year was a copy of Atari Flashback Classics Vol 1 for the Xbox One. It includes over 50 old Atari games, some from the arcade and some from the 2600. As these were all games that I didn’t have any way of capturing footage of previously, I thought it would be fun to let the random number generator pick one to talk about on the blog this week. Unfortunately, the game it chose is so basic that I can’t imagine actually being able to write about it for more than a couple paragraphs. Well, let’s give this a shot. Continue reading
