Only a couple weeks after Nintendo dropped their first Nintendo Direct of the year, Sony has responded with their equivalent, a State of Play. Generally speaking, I haven’t been too positive on most of the State of Plays, finding that their announcements just never hit the same heights as the ones found in Nintendo’s offerings. But that doesn’t mean the potential for a truly great State of Play isn’t there. Could this be the one?
After many rumors and lots of speculation, we got our first Nintendo Direct of the year this week. It wasn’t too hard to guess that there would be one, there’s almost always one in either January or February. And sure enough, we got one. Was it any good? You probably already know this, but yes, it was very good. Let’s talk about it.
When I decided to bring back the feature “How About That Direct?”, I assumed that the first post would be about a Nintendo Direct. After all, there usually is one around this time of the year, and they’re by far the presentations I get the most excited about, outside of E3 anyway. But no, Xbox decided to put on a show today, and they even used the “Direct” name, so of course, I had to watch it and I want to talk about it.
Earlier this morning, Capcom streamed the first presentation of the year that fits the “Nintendo Direct” description. It’s actually kind of weird that it wasn’t a proper Direct, considering it was for information on the Nintendo Switch exclusive title Monster Hunter Rise. But anyway, let’s talk about the presentation, what I liked, what I didn’t, and maybe some of the news itself.
It’s safe to say that Nintendo fans are pretty starved for big announcements. We’re currently in the biggest gap between general Nintendo Directs in the history of Nintendo Directs being a thing and we have no idea what the company plans to release after March. So, when Nintendo announced an Animal Crossing Direct a couple days ago, it was easy to be a little disappointed. But, that game is only a month out and we knew very little about it. At the start of every year, Nintendo fans start to go a little crazy. There’s always an early Nintendo Direct that highlights what to expect In the first several months and sometimes stuff even further off. As such, it was a little disappointing when Nintendo announced a couple days ago that the first Direct of the year would be one focused on Pokemon, rather than a more general Nintendo Direct. But hey, I like Pokemon, so maybe there will be something cool here. Continue reading
