Mario’s Odyssey

It’s not hard to imagine that the next Super Mario game would turn out to be really good. While the different styles of play presented in past titles resulted in people liking certain games more than others, I think most people would agree that there hasn’t been a bad core Mario game. Even with that in mind, I was not prepared for how much I was going to end up loving Super Mario Odyssey. Continue reading

Yono and the Celstial Elephants is Light and Fluffy With Some Hidden Depth

Sometimes it’s nice to take a chance on a game that you know very little about. I first heard of Yono and the Celestial Elephants during Nintendo’s Nindies Showcase a few months ago. There, all they really showed was an elephant running around and solving some puzzles. I thought it looked cute, and since it ended up only being $15, I figured why not give it a shot? Continue reading

Welcome Back, Samus

It’s been really rough being a Metroid fan. It’s been over seven years since the last mainline game in the series came out, Metroid: Other M. That game is, in my opinion, not very good, making it around ten years since the last game in the series that I really enjoyed came out, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Last year, we had a spin-off game, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, a game that is not the disaster that the internet would have you believe it is, but is absolutely not the game we had waited so long for. Continue reading

Star Fox 2 Is As Impressive As It Is Clunky

It’s not every day that a new first-party Super NES game comes out. Originally scheduled to be released in 1995, Star Fox 2 was completed but cancelled. As can be expected, incomplete ROMs could be found on the internet for year. But now, if you’re one of the lucky few who were able to pick up an SNES Classic Edition, you can legally play the fully complete version of the game. But was it worth the wait? Continue reading

Arcade Archives: Mario Bros. Is Simple But Fun

Yesterday saw the release of Arcade Archives: Mario Bros., the first of several classic Nintendo arcade games due to come out on the Switch. I had never actually played the arcade version of Mario Bros., although I played a lot of the NES port while growing up. Because of this, I thought it would be neat to to give it a try, plus being able to take a game I really like on the go is always appealing. So, how did it turn out? Continue reading

Fire Emblem Awakening Check-In: Week 2

Much like the first entry in this series, I didn’t have nearly as much time to play Awakening as I wanted. It’s really hard to find time to play old games when you’re trying to keep up on this year’s ridiculous number of great games and work a full-time job. But I got some time in and made some progress, so let’s talk about it. As always, let’s go over some numbers. I’ve put in about four hours of play, I’m on chapter 6, and Ivan Ooze is currently level 7. Continue reading

Fire Emblem Awakening Check-In: Week 1

I’ve spent a weirdly large amount of time with Fire Emblem games this year, when you consider that it’s not a series that I’ve ever really put any serious time into. There’s Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, a game I didn’t finish, but really enjoyed and need to get back to. And then of course there’s Fire Emblem Heroes, a mobile game that I find myself playing every single day. With this new found interest in Fire Emblem, I really should play through one of the more fan-favorite titles in the series. So, now I’m playing thorugh Fire Emblem Awakening.  Continue reading

Announcing The Next Check-In Series

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you know that I like to play through long games and write up weekly updates. Sometimes, those games turn out to be massive open-ended games that I could lose myself in for months. Sometimes, they end up being charmingly goofy, and instantly become one of my favorites. And other times, they’re Dragon Age: Origins. But what could this next one be? Continue reading

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle First Impressions

Nintendo is no stranger to weird crossover games. There’s the obvious, like Super Smash Bros., the slightly less obvious, like Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games, and the completely bananas like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. The newest game to fit into this category is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, an Ubisoft developed tactical turn-based RPG. Like the weird combination of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem but also about pop stars for some reason, Kingdom Battle sounds too weird to work. After the first few hours with the game, however, I’m pretty confident that this is one of the good ones.  Continue reading
