So, E3’s Been Canceled Again

I think we all knew it was coming, but yesterday, E3 2023 was officially cancelled. If you’ve followed this blog, you know that I at least used to go all out each E3. I’d have a predictions post, individual posts for each press conference, and just general thoughts on the event overall. With me getting back into consistently updating this blog, I was really hoping that this would be the year that I’d get serious with my E3 coverage again, but now this.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. Much like last year, there’s still definitely going to be a bunch of individual showcases around typical E3 time. We already know that Xbox will have one on June 11th. There’s been a PlayStation Showcase rumored for around then for a long time now. Nintendo will almost certainly announce a Nintendo Direct in June. Ubisoft, who announced they were backing out of E3 just a couple days before  the event was cancelled, will be holding a Ubisoft Forward event on the 12th. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is back on June 8th. So, there’s still a lot.

The main thing we’re missing from E3’s absence is having everything under one roof. It was much easier to keep track of everything going on when you could just pull up a schedule for E3 itself. There’s also the show floor. While most of us watching from home care most about the press conferences, a big part of the show was journalists checking out builds of games on the show floor and then talking about what they played. There might be some in person events to go along with the various showcases, but it’s not quite the same thing as the old E3 floor.

So, what does this mean for the blog? Basically, I’m planning to do what I planned to do last year, but then kind of failed to do. There will still be predictions. I’m going to wait until we have a pretty clear idea of exactly who is going to be presenting what and when, but it’ll be there. Then, there will posts for each of the showcases. If there’s multiple in the same day, I still want to do individual posts. Then, when it’s all said and done, there will be a post with how I felt this year went and how I did on the predictions.

I do wish that E3 was still happening this year. But at least we can keep it alive in spirit. Is next year the year that they finally figure out how to make E3 work again, or will this collection of individual events be the new normal? It’s hard to say, but I’ll keep doing this either way.
