Finishing off the E3 Press Conferences was the Nintendo Spotlight, a 25 minute pre-recorded video full of announcements and updated looks at games. Despite the short length, Nintendo managed to put a whole lot of great stuff in there, including a couple announcements that fans have been waiting forever to hear. As I mentioned in my post about the Microsoft press conference, I’m a bigger fan of Xbox platforms than Sony ones. But even I can’t deny that Sony consistently has had the best E3 press conferences the last few years. From destroying the Xbox One’s nonsense DRM policies, to launching the PS4 at $100 less than their competition, to revealing dream games like Shenmue III and Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sony always brings their A game to E3. Which is why it’s a pretty big bummer for me to say that I felt let down this year. Continue reading
Ubisoft’s press conferences have been pretty solid the last couple of years. They’ve never quite hit the levels of the first-party publishers or anything, but there’s always good stuff. A couple years ago, Bethesda had their first E3 press conference, and it was a pretty big deal. Fallout 4 was shown off after having just been announced a little bit before and Doom looked incredible. While there wasn’t a ton of announcements, they felt they justified why they needed one of their own. Last year was less of a big deal, but they had Skyrim Special Edition and Quake Heroes, plus some VR titles. It was pretty cool. This year’s show was pretty different, however. Continue reading
The last few years haven’t been very kind to the Xbox brand. The Xbox One started its life with a bad reputation, due to plans for “always online” style DRM that despite never actually happening, cost them a lot of their fans. Then you have the fact that the PS4 was more powerful, cheaper, and had a much more diverse line of exclusives. Then Microsoft cancels one of their big exclusives, Scalebound, while others seem to just kind of disappear. As one of the few people who genuinely prefers Xbox consoles to their PlayStation counterparts, it’s been very hard to watch. So, I’m happy to report that this year’s Microsoft E3 Press Conference was phenomenal. Continue reading
I look forward to E3 all year and happily watch every press conference. That being said, EA has always struggled to grab my attention. Part of it might be that I don’t care about sports games, which are a huge part of EA’s business. But it’s also the caliber of the announcements that they bring. They just don’t hit the way other conferences do. This year, EA distanced itself from the other shows by being the only press conference of the day. With all eyes on them, did they manage to pull off a better presentation? Continue reading

My entire day was dominated by Nintendo’s Treehouse Live show. I could have tuned in to various live streams to see other games, many of which weren’t at the press conferences, but all I wanted to do was watch the new Zelda. And it was worth it, because although I think the reveal of Resident Evil VII might have been my biggest surprise moment this year, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is absolutely the game I’m most looking forward to.
