What I Want From The Switch 2

We all know the successor to the Nintendo Switch is coming in the near future. We don’t know exactly when, we don’t know how much it’ll cost, we don’t even know what it’s called, but we know it’s coming. I thought it would be fun to write what I want to see from the console. Might not be the most exciting list of features you’ve ever seen, but here’s what I’m hoping for.

There’s a number of reasons why the Wii U failed, but a big one was the name. While anyone clued into video games enough to be reading a blog like this one was fully aware of what the Wii U was, the average person that made the Wii such a success had no idea. There were even news stories referring to it as a new controller for the Wii. I want Nintendo to avoid this by not getting too cute with the Switch successor’s name. Just call it Switch 2. Maybe Super Switch. But nothing where it could be mistaken for anything other than what it is. For the rest of this article, I’m going to go ahead and call it Switch 2.

The Switch 2 needs full backwards compatibility with the original Switch. People have invested a lot into Switch software, both physically and digitally. Our Nintendo Accounts need to carry our digital purchases forward. And if I can put one of my more than one hundred physical Switch games into a Switch 2, I’m going to be pretty upset.

While I hope the Switch 2 is compatible with all the Switch’s controllers, I also hope it comes with new and improved Joycons. We really can’t go through the analog stick drift pandemic again. And if they can make them more ergonomic so that we can play more comfortably for longer, that would be incredible.

I’d really like to see 4K output when the Switch 2 is docked. If that means a dock with extra horsepower in it, as long as they can keep the price down, I think that would be great. The affordability of the original Switch was a key factor in its success, so while I want all these bells and whistles, I really want them to find a way to keep the cost down.

And of course, the Switch 2 needs a fantastic first year or games. The original had a brand new Zelda available at launch, and not long after, a new 3D Mario. Add in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and yes, even Arms, and you get one of the best first years of a console in history. There’s no way there’s a new Zelda ready to go this time, but maybe it’s Mario’s turn to launch with the new console. If they can mirror the Switch’s first year even a little bit, we’ll be in for something special.

So like I said, probably not the most exciting list of features you’ve ever seen, but after the Switch’s success, I think Nintendo needs to stick to the formula this time. Think of it like going from the NES to the SNES. The SNES didn’t reinvent the wheel, it just gave us bigger and prettier versions of what we already had. That’s really all I’m looking for from the Switch 2.

Oh, and maybe a sequel to Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
