Random Game Wednesdays: Silent Service (NES)

One of the interesting things about having a large retro collection is that there is a lot of games that I own that I’ve never played. I’m not even sure when I got Silent Service. It’s not a game a grew up with, and I doubt it would be I would have picked up at a local gaming shop. Maybe at Goodwill or a garage sale? But either way, it’s in my collection and apparently today was the day I was going to give it a try.

Random Game Wednesdays On Thursday: Predator (NES)

It seems like the random number generator I use for this feature really likes giving me licensed games, and it did so once again. This time it’s Predator for the NES. Based on the 1987 film of the same name, Predator is an action platformer where you jump around and punch and shoot things. Most licensed games, especially during this era of games, were garbage, but there were some that were legitimately great games. Which one does Predator turn out to be?

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Review

Nintendo’s always finding new ways to reintroduce people to the NES library. Whether it’s putting them out on the Game Boy Advance, including them as bonuses in Animal Crossing, available for download on the Wii and Wii U, or available with the Nintendo Switch Online service, there’s almost always a way to play Super Mario Bros. on a Nintendo console. But those are always straight ports of the old games. They did do the NES Remix series on 3DS and Wii U, which changed things up a bit, but otherwise, it’s been the same thing. This year, Nintendo released Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, bringing with it a new way to experience these games.

Games That Only I Like

Do you have any games that you love that you don’t think you could convince other people are any good at all? I have some. I guess this is kind of like a guilty pleasure, except that I don’t feel guilty about it at all. They’re just games that I think are good that I doubt people would agree with me about. I’m honestly not sure if this is something a lot of people experience or just kind of a “me” thing. The title of this post is kind of an exaggeration, but I had to make it something snappy. Anyway, here’s some games.

Retro Hunting 8/8/24

I buy a lot of old video games pretty regularly. Sometimes they’re old favorites that I just didn’t have in my collection, sometimes they’re games I always wanted to play but never had the opportunity, and sometimes they’re just something weird I found. With how often I do this, I thought discussing the games I pick up might make for a fun new recurring feature on this blog. So, here it is, the first installment of Retro Hunting. I picked up five games this week, all on different consoles.

Random Game Wednesdays: Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo Switch Online)

It’s been a while since I did a new installment of Random Game Wednesdays, and I thought that for the grand return of the feature, I should go to a new source of games. So, I went with the NES library offered with Nintendo Switch Online. There’s already a decent amount of stuff in there, with favorites, more obscure games, and weird enhanced versions of games, most of which I haven’t touched. But of course, the random number generator decided to throw me a game I’ve played a million times before. Continue reading

StarTropics: Rediscovering A Classic

Going back to old games that you haven’t played in years can be kind of a risky thing. As cool as it is to say that the original Legend Of Zelda or Super Mario Bros. is the greatest game of all time, the fact is, games have come a long way since then. What if you go back to a childhood favorite and discover that it’s not all that you remember it to be? I recently managed to get an NES Classic Edition thanks to Nintendo finally putting more of them in stores and decided to check out an old favorite of mine, StarTropics. Continue reading
