Hey, It’s The Switch 2!

I was going to write a Thursday edition of Random Game Wednesdays today, but there was something a little more important to talk about today. After tons of leaks, rumors, hopes, dreams, and almost giving up, Nintendo’s next generation console was revealed today. So now that we have a better idea of what it is, what do I think of it?

You might remember that back in November I wrote a post about what I want from the Switch 2. I actually seem to be getting pretty much what I asked for. I wanted a console that was still pretty much a Switch, but more powerful and simply called the Switch 2. I also wanted it to come with improved Joycons and be backwards compatible with original Switch games. That all seems to be what we’re getting. The improved Joycons include the ability to use them like computer mice, which is pretty neat. I also wanted 4K output, a solid first year of games, and an affordable price. Those we don’t know about yet. But I’m still hopeful.

The reveal itself was good, but maybe a little underwhelming. The reveal trailer for the original Switch featured several real world examples of uses for a console that is also a handheld, most famously, taken to a rooftop party with your rich millennial friends. Nintendo didn’t really need to sell us on the concept of the Switch this time around, so instead it was mostly just an animation of the Switch transforming into a Switch 2. It was very effective at showing how much bigger the console is, but definitely not as charming as the original.

The focus of the reveal was on the console itself, but they did manage to squeeze in one game tease. On the screen of the console, for a very short amount of time, we are shown a new Mario Kart game. We can glean a little bit from what they showed, like how there seems to be twenty-four starting positions in the race, so twenty-four racers in a single race. Also, Donkey Kong has a new character model that actually looks a lot like how he looked before the Donkey Kong Country games. There’s not much there, but it looks good.

Finally, the trailer ends with the reveal of a Nintendo Direct in April where we will learn much more information about the Switch 2. It’s kind of a bummer that we have to wait that long, but at least we know a date and won’t have to just keep guessing. So yeah, overall, I’m very excited for what’s to come from this new console. Now I just have to hope that they’re not too difficult to get on release.
