The original PlayStation isn’t really known for its first person shooters, but there are a few notable ones. When I think of exclusive FPS game son the console, the one that I immediately think of is the original Medal of Honor. This was a World War II themed shooter thought up by Steven Spielberg, of all people, during the making of his movie, Saving Private Ryan. That’s a neat thing, but does the game still hold up?

I never know what I’m going to find when I go to a retro game store. There’s definitely games that I keep an eye out for, but usually I’m just popping in and seeing what I find. I actually found one I was looking for a few weeks ago, Godzilla for the PS4, but I didn’t write one of these about it. Maybe I’ll do something bigger with that later. But for now, let’s talk about my most recent haul, which is three games. I got two for the Atari 2600 and one for the Sega Dreamcast.

One of the interesting things about having a large retro collection is that there is a lot of games that I own that I’ve never played. I’m not even sure when I got Silent Service. It’s not a game a grew up with, and I doubt it would be I would have picked up at a local gaming shop. Maybe at Goodwill or a garage sale? But either way, it’s in my collection and apparently today was the day I was going to give it a try.

The Super Nintendo was the console that I discovered RPGs on. I didn’t have my own yet, but I was at a friend’s house and he showed me Final Fantasy II (which is what we called IV back then). During this time, I quickly became aware of many other games in the genre. One that I had heard of but knew absolutely nothing about was Illusion of Gaia. It had a logo that made it look like something similar to Final Fantasy, a title that reminded me of Secret of Mana, and I had no idea if it had anything to do with either of these. Well, now, in 2025, the random number generator has decided that I need to actually see what this game is.

The PlayStation Vita is one of the few gaming platforms that I have absolutely no experience with. I just never felt a need to get one, which is a little weird, right? But ultimately, it doesn’t seem like I missed out on that many games. One that I did, however, was Freedom Wars. With the release of a new remastered version, I decided to correct that on the Switch.

The other day, I was at a retro game store, just looking to see what I could find. I often look through the Atari 2600 section, they’re fun games to collect and not in very high demand so they’re often pretty cheap. I came across two that I didn’t have that were a couple bucks each. One was Mouse Trap, which I wasn’t really sure what it was, and the other was a game I recognized, Tapper. Without thinking too much about it, I bought both games and went on my way.

I don’t really care about sports games, typically, but there are a few that I do enjoy. These are typically older, more arcade-like games, stuff like Tecmo Super Bowl and NBA Jam. When it comes to baseball games, the only one I really latched onto was an NES game called Legends of the Diamond.
