Random Game Wednesdays: Aladdin (Genesis)

Once again, the random number generator decided that I needed to play a licensed game. This time, it gave me Aladdin for the Sega Genesis, made by Virgin Interactive and not to be mistaken for Aladdin for the SNES by Capcom. If you grew up in the nineties, you’ve probably heard people claim that this was the superior Aladdin game because it’s the one where Aladdin holds a sword. Is that enough a reason for this to be a great Genesis game?

Random Game Wednesdays: Justice League Task Force (SNES)

Following the success of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, there was a rush of new fighting games hitting the market in the early 90’s. A lot of them were straight up rip offs of those other games, but there were also several that used popular characters from already existing franchises. Today, we’re talking about one of the latter. Justice League Task Force is a fighting game for the Super Nintendo by Blizzard Entertainment and Sunsoft featuring characters from DC Comics. Is it any good though?

Random Game Wednesdays On Thursday: Predator (NES)

It seems like the random number generator I use for this feature really likes giving me licensed games, and it did so once again. This time it’s Predator for the NES. Based on the 1987 film of the same name, Predator is an action platformer where you jump around and punch and shoot things. Most licensed games, especially during this era of games, were garbage, but there were some that were legitimately great games. Which one does Predator turn out to be?

Random Game Wednesdays: Secret of Evermore (SNES)

I’ve had a copy of Secret of Evermore in my Super Nintendo collection for a long time, but really never put much time into it. I had played it, but I don’t think I made any meaningful progress in it. It’s a pretty similar game to Secret of Mana, a game I love a lot, so it’s a little weird that this one didn’t hold my attention. But from seeing reviews on the internet, it does seem like most people consider this to be the lesser “Secret of” SNES game. That being said, the random number generator decided that it was time for me to take a closer look at it.

Random Game Wednesdays: Final Fantasy VIII (PlayStation)

Any time I get an RPG for Random Game Wednesdays, I feel a little bit of dread. I typically only play about half an hour of a game before writing about it for these posts, and that’s not a lot of time to get a good feel for them. Thankfully, I’m pretty familiar with Final Fantasy VIII. It’s actually always been one of my favorites in the series, however it’s also a game that came out when I was in middle school. Considering how much criticism the game gets, it’s definitely possible that my love for it is mostly nostalgia. But hey, let’s take a look at the beginning of Final Fantasy VIII and see what I think about it.

Random Game Wednesdays: Warlock (Sega Genesis)

I was recently thinking about how long it had been since I wrote an installment of Random Game Wednesdays. Taking a look back, I haven’t written one in over four years. So I decided, why not do a new one? I don’t know if this will be a regular, ongoing thing again, we’ll see how it goes. I don’t have anywhere near as much free time as I had when I first started this feature, but it is one I always enjoyed doing.

Random Game Wednesdays: Lunar Jetman (Rare Replay)

After being disappointed last week with the game the random number generator picked out for me, I thought I’d go back to an old favorite. Rare Replay has been used multiple times for Random game Wednesdays and it might be my all time favorite compilation of video games.  There’s more good on there than bad, but not everything is a winner. Surely I won’t have bad luck two weeks in a row, right? Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Eternal Champions (Sega Genesis Mini)

I excitedly bought my Sega Genesis Mini on the day it came out, planning to play its really good selection of games for hours on end. That didn’t happen, I mostly just played a bit of Mega Man: The Wily Wars and then got distracted with other stuff. But today I thought, hey, Random Game Wednesdays is a great excuse to play it again. There’s so many good games included, there’s no way I’d end up with a bad one, right? Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Final Fantasy IX (Nintendo Switch)

Sometimes the random number generator that decides what I write for this feature is cruel. Today, it selected Final Fantasy IX, a long Japanese role-playing game, and one that I’ve already beaten. So what do I do, play the beginning again? But for what purpose, I’m not getting a new first impression out of it. Do I just load up my save? What will that do, other than look at what the end of the last dungeon looks like? It’s also not fresh enough in my mind to write an actual formal review of it. So, here’s me just rambling about FFIX for like 700 words or so. Continue reading

Random Game Wednesdays: Kirby’s Dreamland 3 (SNES Nintendo Switch Online)

I really like Kirby, but for whatever reason, his Super Nintendo games are a bit of a blind spot for me. But, a couple of them are available on the Nintendo Switch’s SNES app and the random number generator decided I should check out Kirby’s Dreamland 3. Dreamland 2 was one of my favorite games on the original Game Boy, but is 3 a worthy successor? Well, it’s kind of hard to say after only playing through the first world, but here’s what I thought.
